Description
The gluteus medius muscle is a large, triangular muscle located in the lateral aspect of the hip. It is one of the main muscles responsible for abduction, or movement of the leg away from the midline of the body, as well as providing stability to the hip joint when standing on one leg. The gluteus medius muscle originates at the ilium, the uppermost bone of the pelvis, and then inserts at the greater trochanter of the femur, a bony landmark on the upper thigh bone.
In terms of function, the gluteus medius muscle is one of the primary muscles responsible for abducting the hip joint. This movement is important for activities such as walking, running, and climbing stairs, as it helps to keep the legs from collapsing inward and allows the leg to swing outwards and clear the ground. The gluteus medius muscle also plays a role in providing stability to the hip joint when standing on one leg, which is important for maintaining balance and preventing falls.
