The Epidemic
The estimated annual medical cost of obesity in the United States was $147 billion in 2008. While medical costs for people who had obesity was $1,429 higher than medical costs for people with healthy weight. From 1999 –2000 through 2017 –2018, US obesity prevalence increased from 30.5% to 42.4%.
During the same time, the prevalence of severe obesity increased from 4.7% to 9.2%. Childhood obesity is a serious problem in the United States. The prevalence of obesity was 19.3% and affected about 14.4 million children and adolescents. While obesity prevalence was 13.4% among 2 to 5year olds, 20.3% among 6 to 11 year olds, and 21.2% among 12 to 19 year olds.
This is just unacceptable, a weight gain of 11 to 18 pounds, in non-muscle mass, increases a person’s risk of developing type 2 diabetes to twice that of individuals who have not gained weight. While those who gain 44 pounds or more have four times the risk of type 2 diabetes.
System Failure
The rising prevalence of obesity in the United States over the past two decades has had a significant impact on healthcare spending. However, the healthcare system has failed in addressing the root causes of obesity, such as unhealthy diets, lack of physical activity, and preventing its negative health consequences.
As a result, there is a critical need for comprehensive interventions and public health strategies to address the obesity epidemic and its associated health and economic consequences. By prioritizing prevention and early intervention, we can improve the health outcomes of individuals and reduce the burden of obesity on the healthcare system.

Simple Solutions
Current knowledge on the health risks associated with obesity is alarming. Studies show that the prevalence of overweight and obesity is increasing at an alarming rate worldwide. Being overweight or obese significantly increases the risk of developing various diseases, such as type 2 diabetes, hypertension, and high blood cholesterol, which can lead to further complications such as heart disease, stroke, and even premature death. Adolescents who are overweight are at a high risk of becoming obese adults, further compounding the risks.
Fortunately, there are proven ways to reduce the risks of overweight and obesity. A healthy diet, coupled with regular physical activity, has been shown to aid in maintaining a healthy weight and can promote weight loss among those who are overweight or obese. Additionally, adopting healthy lifestyle habits, such as getting adequate sleep and managing stress, can further improve overall health outcomes. By prioritizing these lifestyle habits, we can significantly reduce our risk of obesity-related diseases and improve our chances of living a long, healthy life.
